Dunes are one of the most prevalent lands types on the surface of Mars. Most of these areas are low-lying to the surrounding, which allow copious amounts of the ever-present Martian dust to settle and collect there. This process builds up into stretches of soft and slippery sand. These areas are dangerous to cross due to the potential for hidden dangers under the sand, not to mention the danger of a sudden wind shift that could blow a dune over on top of a miner.
Dunes have proven to offer no substantial ores or other reclaimable valuables within their ever shifting areas. Fortunately for the average miner, the Martian landscape is so varied as to normally prevent long runs of dunes from forming.
